This is the first effort to make accessible the information gathered by our research team on the moths of Mexico. In this first draft we present illustrated checklists for two "bombycoid" families: Saturniidae and Sphingidae. We will be adding more information regarding these families and other ones in the future. Eventually, this page will include pictures of all taxa of the families already covered and detailed distribution maps. These maps are being estimated using GARP. Besides the checklists, there is a page with the most basic literature on Saturniidae and Sphingidae, with special emphasis on Mexico. Also, a gazetteer for the localities where Mexican royal and hawk moths have been collected (with data from the most important collections in Mexico and abroad, as well as from literature) is presented. The information used to produce this page is managed with BIOTA 1.61 (Colwell), and the basic web checklists were generated directly by the program. Nomenclature is based on: Kitching, & Cadiou (2000), Lemaire (1978, 1980, 1988, 2002) and Minet & Lemaire (1999). This information is one of the results from our past and ongoing research projects which have been funded by CONACyT and CONABIO. For general questions or comments, please email: Dr. Manuel A. Balcázar Lara (mabl@cgic.ucol.mx)
